Strategies TA Visits SHIELDS for Families in Los Angeles
On September 24, the Strategies TA team had the privilege of visiting SHIELDS for Families in Los Angeles, an organization with more than three decades of experience serving families and communities across the county.
SHIELDS operates an impressive array of programs that reach diverse populations, including 6 vibrant Family Resource Centers providing essential supports for children and families. Their work reflects both innovation and compassion, creating meaningful impact in the lives of families every day.
Our team was warmly welcomed by SHIELDS’ CEO, Kathryn Icenhower, and program managers, who shared the history and ongoing impact of their work. We toured one of their program sites and learned more about the SHIELDS Genesis Program, which serves adult parenting women with children ages 0–18 who have a short or moderate-term history of substance use. Genesis provides both outpatient and intensive outpatient services, along with classes in Spanish and English, all designed to strengthen families and build pathways to long-term stability.
This visit highlighted the close alignment between SHIELDS’ mission and the values that guide Strategies TA: equity, resilience, and community-driven action. Seeing these values in action reinforced the vital role Strategies TA plays in supporting prevention organizations and networks to replicate innovative approaches like those at SHIELDS, helping families thrive across Los Angeles and beyond.
The day left our team inspired by SHIELDS’ commitment, creativity, and impact. We look forward to continuing the conversation and exploring ways Strategies TA can support other prevention organizations and networks in replicating what they do, sharing their successes, and serving as a crucial partner in implementing the community pathway in Los Angeles.
